David’s Date Scones are a favourite for many of the family and of friends popping in for afternoon tea. They are especially good hot out of the Homewood oven with homemade jam and lashings of whipped fresh cream.

3 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cream of tartar
2 dsp raw sugar
¼ tsp salt
1 cup chopped dates
1 cup milk
1 egg
1-2 T sour cream
1 dsp golden syrup (optional)

Put the flour in a large bowl and add the baking soda, cream of tartar, sugar and salt. Mix thoroughly with your fingers while spinning the bowl. Add dates and mix well.
Form a deep well in the centre and pour in the milk. Use a fork to beat the egg, sour cream and golden syrup into the milk. Mix into the flour to form a soft dough, adding more milk if needed.
Turn out on to a floured bench and press out to about 30 mm thick. Cut into squares or cut with a glass to form round scones. Should make 8 – 10 scones.

Place scones onto a floured tray and bake in your Homewood oven at 200 C for about 15 min or until golden brown.
