"Last night we lit our Homewood Heritage for the first time this season. Year 12. I have to say, this stove has been the joy of my life since we installed it in our new home in early 2013.
We light it every afternoon from the second week of May to the second week of September each year. It heats our home and our hot water, cooks all our meals, and provides a constant source of general comfort. The heat seems to accumulate in the concrete block wall behind the stove and through the concrete floor around it, emitting a constant warmth.
We grow all our own firewood so that's also become a whole other facet integrated into our lives. Over the years we have cooked meals in our Homewood for people from all over the world. They are invariably fascinated and amazed by how it works. A French engineer was stunned when I told him the left cooking plate above the firebox is faster than the gas we use in the summer months.
McIntyre, our Jack Russell who featured in some of the early photos, lived to age 18. His go-to spot in the winter was always stretched out on the floor in front of the Homewood, especially once dinner was over. I think he thought it was there primarily for him.
We hope generations of your family keep this wonderful tradition of Homewood Stoves going for many decades to come.

My daily washing routine looks a little different

My daily washing routine looks a little different depending on the weather!

The drying rack works great when paired with an intense heat source like our Homewood Heritage cookstove - the extra humidity introduced from the washing helps replace the moisture being driven out by the stove (a simmering stove top kettle can do the same thing 🔥)

But when the sun is shining, it's great to get it out in the fresh air for a bit of extra sanitization in the UV light (especially important with the reusable cloth nappies 🤎)

Either way, life can feel like an endless cycle of washing sometimes! 😂 ~Janie x

This is our Homewood Companion model - currently the smallest of the cookstoves that we make. It's a lovely little stove; single oven, two cooking plates at differing temperatures for stovetop cooking, and the only Homewood we offer with legs (gorgeous, but optional!) 🧡

This particular one photographed is a VERY special one! It is in my sister Grace's cottage on the family farm (see more of her and family over here: @theoldway.nz 🐎), and is the very first Companion we ever built, about 14 years old now and has had a varied and interesting life!

We built it, ran it, then tested it here at the Homewood Stoves workshop, aaaaaand pulled it apart again, cut off fins, rebolted them in different places to tweak the circulation and performance, rebuilt it, ran and tested it some more, went back and modified all our patterns(!) with the matching improvements! This unit then went to the lab for safe installation clearance testing, where they ran it until glowing red hot(!!!). For the next few years it alternated between running here at the workshop and us taking it to the field days for display and promotion (boy, been a fair few years since we last went along to any kind of trade show!), before finally ending up on Homewood farm around 2015; Janie and I (and I think just 3 kids at the time??) then took over Grace's kitchen for a day of filming a demonstration video, so it "starred" in what I think is still our most viewed YouTube video 💥

Something I love about this smaller but open plan space is how we all do life together in close and cosy proximity . . . While still getting the feeling of little pockets here and there 🧡

Still a fair few things on the "To Finish" list, most relevent here being shelves and cupboards under the sinks, still on the hunt for a perfect Welsh dresser by the main door, and plans for all around the Homewood stove (we are going to put in more non-combustible benches beside and a drying rack above, hopefully sometime this year) 🔥 ~Janie x

This is us, a big part of Homewood - Zak and Janie

This is us, a big part of Homewood - Zak and Janie, and our six children: Zelda (holding Piper, the chicken), Vera (holding Eugene, the cat), Tilda (in front of Janie), Gretel (tucked behind Vera), William (with the cap) and baby James.

Zak and I have been married nearly 17 years, and are finally in our own home this last year which I am loving filling up with all the special things I've collected through the years in anticipation of this time. We live on a small homestead in the New Zealand countryside, completely off-grid, with one of our cookstoves at the centre of our lives. I homeschool our children, we have a growing collection of animals, and any spare time I get you can find me in the garden ❤️

Zak runs the stove-making business, founded by his father more than two decades ago (more on David and Penelope later), and has had a crazy busy couple years with the building and the growing business - thankfully he has a great team of guys working with him at the workshop (more on them later too) 🔥

"Hi Zak and family, finally got stove installed this week, it all went really well, water jacket works real good. What a bloody awesome stove, had first beef roast and veggies last night 😊. The wood box is old gold mining gear from Central Otago as is the schist rock, I used to do some high country mustering down there. Awesome part of NZ very inspiring landscape. I have just done 3 weeks fencing down at Flagstaff Flat and [other customers] are doing well as too is their Companion, that's why I was so keen to get home to install mine!"

Production update: these last couple years got very crazy, with our waiting list ballooning and lead times getting rather ridiculous (some people waiting over 12 months for their stove!). To get things back under control we closed export orders, purchased more machinery and took on more staff.
We are now happy to report that our wait times have returned to "normal" (4-6 months from order, but do get in touch if need sooner) AND are finally re-opening exports!!
So if you're in NZ and have wanted a Homewood but haven't wanted to wait, now is a great time to jump on the waiting list.
If you're international: we have a couple export batches planned (Heritage and Companion) imminently, with the idea they'll deliver this side of the Northern Hemisphere winter, so email us ASAP if you want to get a slot!
Matriarch production: still on hold (doh! Janie and I personally are in our next production run), but SHOULD finally be squeezing in a batch later this year/early next.

As someone working in this greatly-diminished industry as it quietly enjoys a very long twilight, reading about the heights of impressive production that these giants of yesteryear reached in their heyday elicits wonder, envy and melancholy from me – in near equal measure. Homewood Stoves gets a brief mention in the book, and while it IS slightly more than a footnote, does serve to drive home just how much of a “footnote” we are, 100 years after the peak, and dwarfed by the historical scale! When taken with the knowledge of the positive difference we make in the lives of our small but dedicated customer-base though, this framing is both humbling and inspiring.

Operating as we do, here in the ashes of those who went before us, this is the spark we have chosen to nurture into the future, and the flame lives on 🔥 Small as it now is, the market for traditional stoves is one that we have witnessed actually grow since we first started – as more people forge their own path of resilience and self-reliance in an uncertain world – and it is with that firmly in mind that we continue: carrying this torch of ours into the night, for those who still seek its light.

This is a rather sneaky stove - I remember being shocked and confused when someone in California contacted me asking for the details of the plumbing thread on the stove he was connecting up in his home - a Homewood he already had in his possession, over there on the opposite side of the Pacific Ocean! At the time, our website said we would not send internationally and this enterprising individual had just gone ahead and ordered it through a third-party NZ-based freight-forwarder anyway, making it out very first (unofficial!) export/Homewood outside of New Zealand (unless we've missed someone else doing it even earlier 😂)
Good for him - I'm glad he just went ahead and took the initiative, love the setting it ended up in, and am glad it's been a source of comfort for him and his family these last six-odd years: "The stove is working great. Heat, hot water and cooking. We just finished our off-grid solar project and the farm is self sufficient"

MOLESWORTH STATION - here's a story about one of our more special sales 🔥🇳🇿

At nearly half a million acres (180,787 ha), Molesworth is NZ's largest working farm, a national treasure of stunningly-rugged high country, famous for its breathtaking scenery (seriously, look at how beautiful it is: #molesworthstation 😍)

A few years ago the farm manager at Molesworth, Jim, got in touch. He was after a pair of our Homewood Heritages for the two farm camps; completely off-grid, remote places that a whole team of them will stay in and be based out of for stretches at a time when mustering (much of it on horseback!) and the like.

Couldn't ask for a more iconic, appropriate and fitting home for a couple of our stoves to end up, so of course we were thrilled to be able to supply our NZ-made stoves!

Jilly, the station cook, sent me these kind words:
"Dear Zak, I have been using your wood stoves for cooking at Bush Gully and Tarndale, both of our main camps on the Molesworth Station.
I was able to be confident with them from the first time I used them. It was helpful for me to have had experience using wood stoves before but I found them very easy to operate.
The size of the main oven is great when cooking for large amounts of people as there is plenty of room for multiple trays or dishes. The bottom oven is really good for slow cooking and allows for the top oven to be used independently. I was able to do things like cook a casserole and bake bread at the same time. The top of the stove has three plates that are at different temperatures and I can be simmering, boiling and rapid boiling at the same time, which is great when a cuppa is needed in a hurry..." We generally don't restore antique stoves, but some very good reasons to make an exception for this one:
1. This is a "Shipmate Stove"; teenie tiny boat stoves with a very long pedigree and grand historic reputation in nautical circles
2. It belongs to an old family friend
3. It lives in a traditionally-built replica of Joshua Slocum's "Spray", the sloop in which he became the first person to single-handedly sail around the world
4. David (yes, our David!) started building this replica of the "Spray" when he was 19 years old after reading Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around the World", and then (after some young woman - our Penelope - and the resulting five children, distracted David somewhat) this old friend completed it!

(Incidentally, I see the modern incarnation/resurrection of 'The Shipmate Stove Co.' is currently for sale, should some enterprising individual wish to keep this history alive!)

FOOTE & SON - this week in 1950, David Kenneth Foo

FOOTE & SON - this week in 1950, David Kenneth Foote was born. In 1983, the day after David's 33rd birthday, his fourth child [of 5] was born: Isaac James Foote [me; Zak!] 🔥
Homewood owes its existence to David, and it's ongoing continuation to Zak. Stove makers and family men, David's five adult children have given him 17 grandchildren so far; five of them Zak's 💛
This is the original Homewood Heritage, still going strong in the kitchen of David and Penelope's ["Mum and Dad's"/"Granny and Gramps'"] home on Homewood Farm, and it too has a big birthday coming up soon [more on that next year!]. David was close to fifty years old when he first embarked on that self-taught patterning project that birthed our business, and back then he could never have predicted just how much of a positive influence his stoves were going to have in the homes and lives of so many families; all over New Zealand, and now many other parts of the world too.

Such an inspiring place to visit with all the life and growth and productivity everywhere, and such an impressive wealth of knowledge this local family have accumulated. Almost overwhelming how much we were taught over the two days 😱 Such densely-packed and valuable insights that I am still digesting and appreciating as I go over my jumbled notes. Highly recommended to anyone needing the #permacultureskills and motivation to start something like this yourself - you'll definitely come away inspired!!
One of the best perks of this less-ordinary business of ours is the connections like this that we get to make with many and varied Homewood owners out there - so many of you are incorporating them in such interesting lives!!

It gets the baking oven up to temp in less than half an hour after lighting the fire. The fire box allows for pretty long logs and burns any type and shape of wood very clean. We never see smoke come out of our chimney after lighting. It is great to see the fire too. Its so amazing that the stove is made locally by such a wonderful family business. The team has been always very helpful and recently did a great service on the stove. We cook on our stove pretty much all year round every day and can’t rave about it enough. It does so much for us, hot water, cooking top, oven, lower oven, drying stuff on it. Had a few friends buying one too and they are equally impressed. We sent this stove to a Belgian couple nearly five years ago now, and it ended up in their amazing country estate in southern France. Amazing spot, huh! They harvest their own olives and honey, and forage truffles with their beautiful dogs 😍
Since then, we've exported a bunch more; there are now people with our stoves in Australia, the States, the UK, some of the Pacific Islands (Tonga/Fiji), and if my current waiting list is anything to go by, they're soon to be joined by a bunch more, including to some new and exciting destinations! 🇳🇿🇳🇿

Might be tricky to spot, but capping off the alcove, and hiding a bracing bolt (just below the trophy, top centre) is the soot door of an old Shacklock Orion. Presumably the original coal range in this home, these customers found the old soot door in a paddock outside, on the very day the tiler was thinking of ways to cover the bolt. A lovely bit of serendipity, and a very fitting homage to what came before.

We're playing Agricola: Family Edition here - you start with two farmers in a little mud hut, and over the course of the game grow your farm by sending them out to work: they build paddocks, plough fields, collect wood and brick; wheat gets harvested and livestock breeds. You expand your home and family (more kids = more things can be achieved, but then more mouths to feed - little bit like real life 😂).
Zelda (9) really likes it, though it's not yet captured the interest of Vera (7, nearly 8).

We play LOTS of games in our family. Modern boardgaming has exploded as an industry this century with literally 1000s of new games being designed and released every year, with something for nearly everyone. For many, the appeal is it is a way to escape screens, while coming together to socialise. There are games that can be learned and played in minutes, at any age; ones that have thick (or even multiple!) rulebooks and involve complex mechanisms and strategy - and everything in between.

Boardgaming is active entertainment that requires your participation and engagement - not just with the game in front of you, but also the other people at the table. I think everyone could do to spend some time playing games. For children, it's excellent at cultivating focus, and a great way to engage in some competitiveness (though plenty of fully cooperative/non-competitive games out there too) and learn how to graciously handle things not going to plan, helps with family bonding (seeing parents "give" the time to play with them is pretty invaluable, I think); and for adults keeping on learning stretches our brains, and because it's not just background noise it forces us to slow down and be present in the moment in a way that might not happen so often for us any more...

Picked up one of these Kindling Crackers the other day, and the kids have really taken to it. Zelda and Vera spent ages taking turns, turning everything they could into kindling. I still prefer a sharp #hatchet, but even Janie likes using this - and anything that gets the kids excited about helping is good by me! 😂 A very safe, stable way of splitting small wood.
A Kiwi invention, Dad remembers meeting them @fieldaysnz years ago when they were just first starting out (back when we had the time to go ourselves!) - and now @kindling_cracker sell all over the world, pretty cool!
(You can tell from the photo what makes up 99% of our kindling - old pallets! Highly-rated - you just want to make sure the pallets you're salvaging haven't been chemically-treated, and be prepared to sift your ash for nails before adding to your compost!)

‘The Heart of the Home’ – what does that mean to you? We’ve had repeat customers tell us that it was only after the Homewood was installed that their new house felt like home again. Others have sold their house, but taken their stove with them, so strong the connection to their Homewood.
People saying that their stove has become the heart of their home is more than just hollow cliché or superficial praise to us, but a truth that resonates deeply and gets to the core of what we are about. A place of warmth and sustenance, provider of hot showers and shared meals; a gathering point around which family and friends congregate and catch up; an escape from the cold; a welcome refuge from the stresses and demands of modern life; the natural spot to sit alone and watch the flames in quiet contemplation, or with favourite book or latest craft project, as the kettle bubbles merrily away and the smells of baking fresh-out-of-the-oven fill the room.

I'm putting together a list of all the wonderful activities over-and-beyond 'mere' baking that you might not first think of, but that a #cookstove (both in and around one) can help with.
So far I have: clothes drying, dehydrating fruit, candle making, preserving/canning, cheese making, warming abandoned lambs (or any other rescued critters!), rising bread, growing cultures, fermenting/brewing, organic compost/#biochar, rendering fat/lard, making #ghee, drying sodden work or sports boots in the lower oven - what else do I need to add?!

Because we're completely off grid and there's not as much solar power at the moment with the short days, it's been our only water heating source and it's been doing a great job. Why the acorn? Every so often someone'll ask us why we have the acorn + oak leaves detailing on our stoves, rather than something that more obviously screams "THIS WAS MADE IN NEW ZEALAND", like the kowhai flower, silver fern or kiwi.

I've waxed poetic, speaking of the oak trees growing at the farm gate to Homewood, about David remembering collecting acorns as a young child, of this being his nod to the northern-hemisphere roots of cast-iron cooking stoves, or tribute to his great-grandfather who ventured all the way here from Britain. The humble oak nut contains within it the promise of spring, the reminder of new life beyond winter and all the potential of the mighty tree. The squirrel gathering up acorns in anticipation of the approaching lean months is a near-universal symbol of preparation and hard-work, resilience and survival through hard times. Many hooks here from which to draw links and meaning to our own relationship with woodstoves and firewood, comfort and sustenance, continuity and sustainability. All pretty apt too, I think.

But the more honest answer is that the acorn just intuitively felt right to Dad, without any of this over-thinking, and he enjoyed carving them!

Who else finds Instagram inspiring and motivating? This has been a pleasant surprise for me, having joined only reluctantly, to then discover I find it very uplifting and encouraging to see others living well (mouth-watering baking and cooking, all the fantastic and productive gardeners, clever crafty people sewing and knitting, people saving old homes [and stoves!], families spending time together out-of-doors pursuing homesteading lifestyles, etc etc!) and one of the things I have found particularly interesting is people like @franklandaxeandtool who rescue and #restore old tools and axes [tell me if you know of anyone doing #axerestoration or #handtoolrestoration here in New Zealand that I should be following!]. So when I saw this [probably-not-even-all-that-old] axe head rusting away on a neglected shelf in the far corner of our back shed, I thought I'd have a go myself. I've probably "seen" this #bahcoaxe head dozens of times over the last decade, but thanks to Instagram, this time I actually noticed it.

Shouldn't even really call this a "restoration" - the head only needed a quick hit with a wire brush and the edge just a very light grind/sand, and I didn't carve the handle or anything - just off the shelf from the hardware store, with minimal fitting needed, and me choosing to pre-age it [rather heavy-handedly!] with a blowtorch and some stain. But I'm happy. If I get an opportunity in the future to do another one maybe I'll do something a little more sophisticated, but for now even this quick job is going to make the task of splitting kindling more satisfying. Each time I pick it up, I'll be reminded of the input I had in this tool's journey, and imagine it happy being back doing what it was made to do. 🔥

It is easy to light and quick to heat up. Kettle is always hot, and just love it for cooking; the lovely big oven is fantastic – cooks anything from pav’s to roasts: all cooked to perfection.

We built a solar-powered house so the right fire was very important. I am so pleased we found the Homewood Heritage, it is fantastic and so efficient – I just love it. It’s awesome for cooking, heating our home, and for hot water. The fire looks stunning in our kitchen as you can see in the photo. How to manage unwanted heat over summer?? "Slaving over a hot stove" - not exactly the most flattering of expressions, but at this time of year with the heat of our current New Zealand summer it can start feeling appropriate!

While some might just not use their stove at all over the hotter parts of the year, managing summer usage is a very important consideration for plenty of people living off-grid who rely on their Homewood for all their cooking, hot water and home heating, no matter the time of year or climate.

In these warmer months, the home-heating aspect changes from a welcome feature into something to be managed and worked around.

Kitchen design can help: having doors and windows on opposite walls that can be thrown right open to give a through-breeze and whisk away heat; if high stud-height, a ceiling fan that pushes heat down and around over winter, but reverses to pull it away [with an appropriately-located vent or window to open] in summer; for those using heat transfer kits to send warmth down to the cooler parts of the home in winter, an extra path to the outdoors to be opened over summer, turning the system into an extractor.

But the main way to manage things in these warmer months is changing usage habits! Where over the winter the stove might be running close to 24/7, summer sees a shift in routine. Running the stove less, for shorter bursts, in the cool of the morning or evening. Maybe every other day, just long enough to bake some extra loaves of bread/boost water temperatures back up and cook a meal or two; then on the days the stove isn't running eating leftovers [cool cuts of meat with fresh salad a favourite here!]. Summer means BBQ season in New Zealand, so many people are supplementing their normal routine with outdoor living and barbequing anyway.

To bring it all back to the featured images - great shots, courtesy of Sam @tasteandseenz - bottling day just might unavoidably be the hottest day of the year as the excess summer harvest of fruit needs preserving and squirrelling away. Take heart though - your winter-self will be grateful of your efforts!

BLACK. Following on from the last post, here's another example of black being incorporated effectively. With the stove already being black, I think a lot of people are nervous about including more, for fear of overwhelming the install, but as you can see from this and the previous example, that needn't be the case. For people after an alternative to the more rustic/traditional look [see a bunch of the lovely brick posts earlier!], a splash of black can be a great way to achieve a sleeker, more contemporary feel to an installation.

Love how the peripheral grey and white work in this kitchen to put the focus on the alcove and the stove alive with flames. (And the cat, always love the cat!)

Vera! Seven years old, Vera is our second child.

We were a pretty quiet family until Vera exploded onto the scene with her larger-than-life personality: expressive, strong-willed, dramatic and LOUD! Full of life, she feels things very strongly [and is not shy about letting everyone know it], is beautifully kind with the younger ones, scrappy and feisty as she stands up to her "bossy" big sister, and is always excited [or despairing] about SOMETHING.

I asked her to help choose the photo for her introduction, but she loved all of them, so here they all are! Chooks at Homewood, playing her ukulele, horse-riding with Aunty Grace, ballet, and art class with Aunty Jess.

That's all five of our kids introduced now: Zelda, Vera, Tilda, Gretel and William. Hopefully you're not getting tired of seeing all this family stuff on a business page, because family is central to everything we do at Homewood. My aunty lent me this book after seeing some of the old drawings we've been sharing recently. Absolutely fascinating reading, gorgeously illustrated.

John Seymour, better known for his more influential work: 'The Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency', has a Wikipedia entry that makes me smile: "a prolific early author in the self-sufficiency movement. He had multiple roles as a writer, broadcaster, environmentalist, agrarian, smallholder and activist; a rebel against: consumerism, industrialisation, genetically modified organisms, cities, motor cars; an advocate for: self-reliance, personal responsibility, self-sufficiency, conviviality (food, drink, dancing and singing), gardening, caring for the Earth and for the soil ... John was as much at home in the humblest house on a hillside, as in the manor house of landed gentry. He was like a force of nature, always willing to listen, always interested in learning about new - or very old - ways of working the land. He was a one-man rebellion against modernism" - sounds very much like either of my parents, and our kind of people! Custom rack we built to cap off the tiled brick on my brother's Homewood Heritage installation in his restored 1890s Kauri villa.

A rack is extremely useful above a stove, and not just for storing cookware. It's very handy having a place away from little reaching hands to keep matches/hang stove tools, and provides a warm shelf for raising bread and drying flowers.

With a 12-foot stud, this installation really helps to fill vertical space, and enhances the look of the whole kitchen. The rack also provided a natural point to drop the flue shields down to (shields that normally begin at ceiling height), simplifying things for us by taking care of the wall shielding in the space between the rack and the ceiling.

Morning tea with Granny on a cold and blustery spring morning!
William is our youngest child, doted on by his four big sisters. He's a very cheerful little fellow, almost always smiling as he toddles after his big sisters.
Penelope has a house cow again, so these scones and biscuits are being served straight out of the Homewood with butter and cream she's churned and whipped herself, fresh from the morning's milk. On the leftmost platter is some fried Halloumi cheese, that she's also made herself with all the milk she's swimming in.
Farm-fresh abundance!

Coffee pot on! Homewood Companion in Wilfred's off-grid bush hut. Check out his custom rail effect; pretty cool the colours stainless steel will turn when you put a blow torch on it (get it glowing red hot, and it'll cool a purplish blue). Living off the grid, his Homewood is his sole source of heating, cooking and hot water (see the exposed copper pipes communicating up the back wall to his hot water cylinder).

The Homewood Matriarch. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest cast iron wood stove still in production anywhere in the world. With three generous ovens and a warming compartment, expansive cooktop and an enlarged firebox to run it all, the Matriarch is in a class of its own today: 1650 mm wide and weighing around 700 kg.
But back in the heyday of woodstoves, various manufacturers (including here in NZ) offered multi-oven/multi-flued bakers ovens, sometimes with two or more fireboxes. That Shacklock No. 13 described in the second pic was 12 feet long - over twice as wide as our Matriarch!! With the advent of the electric oven, so much of this rich heritage was left behind.

Gretel watching Gramps doing some pattern work. I was lucky enough to have her join me for a day at work this week. Gretel is number 4 of 5 [getting through them!] and is at such a precious/delightful age (three-and-a-half, and for now *very much* a little dadda's girl). Going through a phase where everyday she is counting down to the weekend and my being home, then Monday morning when she asks "It still weekend?" and I say "No, I gotta go to work" her smile briefly falters before she then grins and starts the countdown again: "Five days weekend Dadda!!" ❤️
